Overview:
I'm all about helping new guitar players get from wanting to play, to be able to play. The path from can't play to playing well can be much shorter than you might think. Before I studied guitar in University, I was self taught. I know what it's like to struggle with the instrument and I"ve developed a system of teaching that focuses on results. I tend to listen to the student and develop lessons based on what they want to learn, whether that is songs, or scales, or chords, or all of the above. I look forward to meeting you online via skype! Todd
EXPERIENCE
I was self taught until I started to study music at the College level. Being self taught, I learned how to focus on results which was something I didn't get from the Guitar Teachers I'd tried. I was able to combine what I learned about learning on my own, with what I learned about learning from the University. The result is a teaching style focused on getting to the "Playing" as soon as possible. I remember being taught things I didn't want to learn by the few instructors I tried to work with. I feel it's important to let the student decide what he/she wants to learn in order to encourage them to want to play.
METHODS USED
I believe that Guitar is a purely physical thing for the starting player. The basic mechanics of holding the pick and instrument, the basic mechanics of fretting notes, etc. Must be learned before the "Music" can begin. I have developed a Teaching system that gets you moving as quickly as humanly possible by focusing on playing and the player instead of obsessing about Music Theory. Theory is important of course, but I teach theory in the context of playing music. I don't teach theory for it's own sake.
LESSON STYLE
I have been teaching for 10 years and I really love it. There is nothing like seeing a player progress from frustration to shredding their brains out. :) I focus on each student and develop a curricula based on where they are and where they want to be as a player. I tend to listen quite a bit to the student. It's critical to find the students passion that led him/her to the instrument. Is it playing their favorite songs? Creating their own songs? Making great guitar solos? Songwriting? Whatever it is, I help the student realize their goal.
