I love music!! I began playing the guitar at age 9 in South Florida and never looked back! My first band (The Independence) was in third grade and I have been in numerous bands since then ranging from rock and blues to Country. I listen to and play a variety of styles of music ranging from Country, Blues, Pop, Rock, Progressive Rock and Jazz! I love it all ! ! I studied privately with Jazz guitarist, Paul Farkas for over 7 years as well as Vince Bredice at Miami Dade College in South Florida...
I started teaching at a small music store in Hollywood, Florida called “The Banjo Shop”. As the store specialized in Bluegrass music, I was hired to teach students the pop and rock songs being played at that time. I taught there for three years before relocating to North East Ohio. After taking some years off to raise a family I started teaching at GitterPicker String Factory in Twinsburg in 2005. In 2008 I opened my own music studio in Northfield, Ohio called the Olde 8 Guitar Studio and have been teaching ever since!
As far as my teaching methods go, I do not use any of the course books commonly used by many teachers and studios. I feel that this “cookie cutter” approach doesn’t successfully work for everybody as it assumes everyone is the same. I have taught thousands of students over the decades and can say that I haven’t seen two students exactly alike the entire time. Instead I get to know the student’s and their goals and streamline a method to get them to accomplish their goals in the shortest possible time.
Music is meant to be fun, so I make the guitar lessons fun!! I have a pretty relaxed approach to teaching the guitar! No stress!! I have my students provide me with a list of artist or bands that they enjoy listening to as well as songs from those artists that they are interested in learning. I review the list and select an appropriate song for them to learn based on the complexity of the song and their ability. My belief is that showing a student songs that I like to play won’t motivate them to practice, but playing a song they select will!!
