I do not have a degree but what I have is 20+ years of drum instruction experience.
1998-2015-Brought students all the way to State Solo/ Ensemble competitions. 1998- Performed with the Kenosha Pops Band Performed with several bands throughout the years of many different genres such as Jazz, Fusion, Symphonic, Rock, Metal, Latin, Punk, Funk, and Hip Hop.
Throughout the years, I have gained a great deal of knowledge about drumming and music in general. A passion of mine is sharing that knowledge with students of all ages and I know I have a lot to offer. My experience includes meeting various famous musicians, which was very inspiring. It changed the way I looked at my life as a musician, my technique, and style. These top notch drummers and musicians gave me great advice that I'll never forget. Formerly, I have performed with the Kenosha Pops Band but mainly always had my own jazz/ fusion/ progressive rock bands.
While I was still in high school in 1995, I began giving drum lessons to neighborhood kids. After a while, I realized it was something I could really get into. Before even graduating, I taught 10-12 steady students for quite a long time. Some of the neighborhood kids studied with me until they went to college. In the past ten years, I have taught in music stores and am now at the Kenosha Conservatory of Music for over 2 years. With me, students in school focus on recitals and competitions but I also prepare them for symphonic and jazz bands. Older students like to learn songs but I still push formal aspects.
Beginner students with me, no matter what age, start by studying out of the Stick Control book which has many sticking combinations for developing strong hands. It's designed for snare drum but I convert those combinations to the drum set to make unique rhythms that exercise all four limbs. I also stress rudiments for everyone, which I apply to the drum set as well to make it fun. The other aspect of drumming I work on is independence of both hands and both feet. I stress reading to everyone even if they don't want to. I see good in all genres of music and I teach jazz, fusion, symphonic, drum corp, rock, metal, punk, funk, hip-hop, samba, salsa, rumba, bossa nova, and more.
I try to keep lessons fun even though there's aspects that might be boring. So, I will switch from snare drum to drum set. Learning how to combine rudiments with drum set music such as jazz and rock is very beneficial. When my students are having trouble with a certain area, I do well with taking out that area and making a drill out of it. One of my specialties is that I will play the bass with students for various styles so they can have a hands on experience of the relationship of a rhythm section, phrasing, and timing.
