Hello! Playing violin is one of my favorite things to do, and I like to enable others to share my love of the instrument. I graduated from the University of Redlands in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, and played in the University's orchestra and various chamber groups while studying there. I currently play in a chamber group that performs original Japanese music, and I currently teach at a non-profit music school in addition to private lessons. Violin is such a rewarding instrument and a joy to bring to other people.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching private lessons for several years, as well as being on the faculty of a non-profit music school for 5 years after graduating from University. I've found that no matter what the setting, making a good connection with the student is crucial in building a strong teacher-student relationship. My lessons are a balance of building proper technique and enjoying fun music from my always-growing library. I tailor the lesson repertoire to what works best for my student so they can play the music they feel truly passionate about.
METHODS USED
I create a personalized lesson plan for each and every student I teach, because not everyone learns the same way. I incorporate music and exercises from a variety of different books in a way that I think would best suit my student. I will often also have my students learn music that has a part for a second violin, so that I can accompany them. For a complicated instrument like the violin, learning left-hand technique comes before right-hand technique, and then combining them together. I am always on the lookout for proper posture and bow holds as well, those are so so important.
LESSON STYLE
Firstly, I think building a good rapport with my students is important in establishing a comfort level that is conducive to learning. I've found that students(especially children) are more engaged, ask more questions, and have more fun in the lesson if the teacher makes an effort to connect with his or her student. Developing good fundamentals is a big part of how I teach, students end up progressing faster with a solid grasp of the fundamentals. I also cater to what the student is interested in, and introduce repertoire that reflects what they would enjoy playing, in addition to the technical repertoire that I have students play.
