2013 & 2016 TMEA/TJEA All-State Etude for Tenor Trombone (Composer) 2015-2017 CMTA Original Composition Contest (Judge)
I have 20 years of experience teaching in which I have taught band students from fifth grade through college. I have been an adjunct professor of a local college. Building relationships and using differentiated instruction with students has been a key element in guiding them to success. Students under my leadership have made the Texas All-Region Bands, Texas All-Area Bands, Texas All-State Concert Bands, and Texas All-State Jazz Bands. I have taught jazz bands, theory, private lessons, and music appreciation courses in addition to teaching band classes. In 2012, I created the Jazz Trombone Workshop geared for high school tenor and bass trombone players who are wanting to learn more about the art of jazz trombone. In the inaugural year, Grammy Award winning trombonist Mark Gonzales of the band Grupo Fantasma was guest clinician at the workshop. Composing and arranging is a passion I have in addition to teaching. In 2013 and 2016, TJEA selected a jazz etude I had written to be used in the Texas All-Region/State auditions throughout the state of Texas. My composing and arranging can be heard on the several albums and am also a composer/arranger for orchestra, jazz bands, and small groups. I am a member of the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA), Texas Jazz Educators Association (TJEA), and Jazz Education Network (JEN).
I have been band director in the public school system for over 20 years and an adjunct professor in college for several years. Since 1993, I have been teaching private lessons to low brass students ranging from grade 5 through college. Students under my director have been successful in District, All-Region, All-Area, All-State and Texas UIL competitions. I have many years working with students from all backgrounds and ability levels. In addition to teaching, I also compose/arrange music with several compositions being used for the Texas All-State Jazz auditions.
Haven been an educator for over 20 years, I use many methods geared towards student success. I make use of differentiated instruction to maximize student achievement. The main components of my lessons are tone, embouchure development, proper technique, articulation, and better understanding of how instrument works. Materials for lessons are dependent on student level that will include method books, solos, and supplemental music. I encourage students to participate in any outlet that allows them to perform outside of lessons.
There are 3 things I have learned in my years of teaching. They are 'Praise, Tact, and Kindness'. I believe everyone benefits from positive affirmations and reinforcements. When giving constructive feedback towards student, it must be done tactfully and with ways in which to improve. Kindness is key in developing a relationship that not only builds trust but also provides yields positive results. Throughout all my years of teaching, students achieve higher results when the teacher builds them up instead of tearing them down.
