2012 Kick-starter completion. $10,000

2014 Durango Arts Center Micro Grant

Overview:
I am a professional guitarist and guitar instructor living in the vibrant city of Denver CO. I have been teaching and performing professionally for the past 9 years and I maintain my passion for playing guitar and teaching music. I teach guitar, mandolin, ukulele, bass guitar, and group guitar classes to all ages and skill levels. I began playing guitar at the age of 14 in Durango CO. Once I graduated High School I chose to major in music at Fort Lewis College, which is where I began taking music seriously, and set out to become a professional guitarist. I studied classical guitar and studied with the amazing guitarist and teacher Louis Steele. I was also active in all the Jazz ensembles, choirs, and Pep Bands. After graduating I toured the Western US with the indie/soul group Hello Dollface. In my tenure in the band we released two albums, completed a Kick-starter for $10,000, and toured in every western state in the US performing in bars, theaters, private events and festivals. Later I formed the funk/soul band Bacon and as the bandleader I wrote much of the music, and managed the band. We recorded a self-titled EP and received a grant from the Durango Arts Center to produce the album. Currently I am performing in the country duo H and H music, the pop duo Spacecat, and a funk and Motown cover band. I have relocated to Denver from Durango CO and am blessed with all the opportunities that the City of Denver has to offer.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching guitar in 2006 at Katzin Music in Durango CO. I maintained a full schedule and gained a lot of experience teaching students of all ages and skill levels. I have relocated to Denver CO and have started my own teaching business and have undoubtedly gained the most success of my teaching career. Aside from working for myslef I am a regular substitue teacher at Swallow Hill Music in Denver. I strive to develop a love of music with all my students, my lessons are based on my students individual interests. I teach because of my love of music and all the positive benefits that music offers.
METHODS USED
With all of my students I use the music that they love to develop lessons that are fun and effective. Any type of genre or song can be arranged in a way that is approachable to any skill level and will contain many necessary skills needed to play music. Every student learns in his or her own unique way and I strive to accentuate my student’s personal learning styles to give him or her the best chance at success. No one ever regrets learning music and I believe that often times when a student gives up on music it's because they are not taught in a way that is effective for them. A one approach fits all teaching style can cause students to loose interest and not practice which in turn leads them to get frustrated, bored and ultimately causing them to give up. I teach because I love to see people get those a-ha moments, which gives them the ability, understand music in a way that they can teach themselves.
LESSON STYLE
Lessons are catered to each student’s interests, goals, and musical tastes. Whatever style of music you choose to learn can be arranged in a manner that is approachable to any experience level and will in turn emphasize specific techniques and concepts needed to develop as a musician. Song choice is an integral part of the curriculum being the catalyst for the direction of each student’s lesson. The biggest goal of my lessons is to get my students playing first and foremost. Developing the ability to play competently is the difference between fostering a love for playing an instrument and giving up. No one regrets learning an instrument and the benefits of music and making music are paramount

Travis rocks. My 7-year-old son and I both take lessons with him. Travis has moved me off the plateau I was on with lessons that focus on theory and technique. And for my son, he's been able to instill a desire and interest that were missing when he previously took piano lessons. With Travis teaching us, the limits are the ones we impose on ourselves. Needless to say, Travis himself plays a mean guitar to boot!

Travis is an extremely knowledgeable guitarist and teacher. Travis is equally comfortable in playing/teaching jazz, rock, blues, or classical styles. I really like the way he explains things and he has the ability to make difficult material seem simpler. Travis is very likeable, enthusiastic, and always very professional. I think Travis would be great teaching either children or adults because he's very patient. My learning experience with Travis has been outstanding. He taught me some great techniques for chord substitution and for soloing. I'll continue to work with Travis because he inspires me to be a better guitarist. I think he could really help me with composing because he writes some great songs too! Thanks Travis!

Travis has been working with my 11-year-old son for a couple months. He's very responsive to the music my son wants to learn and is supportive what he wants to play. Travis is punctual, polite and trustworthy.

Travis taught me for a little over 4 years, and he is the best teacher I've ever had. He taught me to love music and guitar, and is just a fun and nice person to be around. I can't recommend him enough.

Travis is the greatest. He knows his music and how to teach it. He gives you time to learn, but will not allow student time to get lazy. I know he teaches all age groups. Young pre-teens to us old folks 78 years young. I have been taking lessons from him since early December 2014. He is a true professional. You can't go wrong with him.
