BM, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Performance and Music Education
Overview:
For the past decade I have been performing with the U.S. Navy Music Program in places like Australia, Japan, Costa Rica, New Orleans, and Norfolk, Virginia. I've been a featured soloist on clarinet and saxophone with concert bands, jazz bands, rock groups, and brass bands. Before joining the Navy I taught band and woodwind classes for a public school in Northeast Ohio, and I'm excited to begin working with students in Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C.
Teaching is my passion, because it provides the constant challenge of finding ways to unlock a young musician's potential. No two students learn the same way. While I can rely on my "bag" of techniques and methods, I believe each student requires and deserves a unique plan to help them reach their fullest musical potential. Part of what I love about teaching involves the time spent getting to know a student, and working with them to construct a plan that leads to success.
EXPERIENCE
Since my days in college as a music education and performance major I have been developing my method as a private lesson teacher and have built an approach that emphasizes technical and musical development alongside the study of ear training and improvisation. All of these factors are combined together to create a well rounded musician.
You can expect to learn the fundamentals of your instrument that will help you perform any kind of music, and receive custom-made lessons designed to help you grow as a musician. I make sure my students learn something new in each week, and experience success with weekly goals that are practical and achievable. Using my training and experience as an educator and performer, I focus on helping students build a solid foundation, and then develop their musical abilities as they grow and learn. Parents and students can expect a professional demeanor, and clear communication about all aspects of a student's progress. Contact me today, let’s begin making music!
METHODS USED
Students can expect to work from a variety of method books to study instrumental techniques, and music theory. For beginning students I prefer Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, but also work with any method book a student uses in their band class. Students will also work from the Peters/Yoder Master Theory Series. We will also incorporate a students "favorite" music to help develop listening skills and gain a level of comfort and familiarity with improvisation from the very beginning of their lessons with me. Music is an aural art, and I believe it is critical for students to develop the ability to play what they hear in addition to being able to read and play from published music and method book sources.
LESSON STYLE
All lessons are tailored to each students ability level, with the goal of creating specific, achievable objectives to foster a successful environment. Students tend to enjoy working on what they are passionate about, so I am interested in finding where a students musical passion exists, and incorporating it into lesson plans and assignments. I do not tolerate shortcuts, but rely on positive reinforcement to encourage students to develop their skills thoroughly. I employ a gentle but firm approach combined with high expectations for the achievement of each assigned goal.
