I'm an exciting and tenacious teacher of music; I found a passion and love for music at a young age, and I would love to pass it on to anyone willing to learn! Starting out on alto sax, I was in concert band from 4th graded onward, then joined the marching band in 8th grade transferred to tenor sax from 9th-12th. I picked up the bass guitar in 10th grade, then the electric and acoustic guitar in 11th. I currently play lead guitar in a rock band that performs around the Gulf Coast! I also play both electric guitar and bass guitar at Pathway Church!
I started teaching around the summer of 2013. My first pupils were children that were active members at my old church. They were interested primarily in acoustic guitar, I discovered how wonderful it made me feel to see their faces "light up" when they learned their first chord. Who knew just how much joy you can bring into a person's life just from learning a "G"? From then on, I began teaching both children and adults at my home studio. More recently, I have begun teaching in and around the Mobile area. Some of my former students are now able to play full-length songs in a concert setting! I am ready and willing to teach anyone who is willing to learn!
When teaching beginners (especially kids/teens), I think back to how I learned the alto sax. So in terms of teaching saxophone, I teach from Bruce Pearson's Standard Of Excellence Volume 1! When giving a lesson, I start out by asking basic questions about what drives the student to succeed. I make a plan of action for them to achieve the goals! First starting on rudiments, then progressing to full length songs! I also keep them lessons fun and interactive; no one likes a boring one-sided lecture, right? As far as teaching guitar and bass goes, I teach the way I learned: start out by learning basic chords and simple scales/arpeggios. Then I progress to barre chords and before I know it, my students are playing their favorite songs!
A passion for learning music is never something that can be forced. Therefore, when teaching a student, I never force them to achieve unattainable goals. I encourage them to learn at their own pace with "stepping-stone" goals; my students learn rudiments that build onto progressively more advanced techniques! I will also look at songs pertaining to their chosen instrument and their current proficiency at said instrument. I will show them section-by-section (verse, chorus, bridge, solo, etc.) "how it's done", then give them a chance to try it! I am a strong believer in kinesthetic, "hands-on" learning! In my experience, it's the most successful teaching method. I am able to encourage my students by literally teaching "if I can do it, you can do it too"!
