My passion is performing and teaching drums. Ever since I picked up a pair of drumsticks for the first time two decades ago, I knew from then on I wanted to make teaching and performing my career. I have been teaching privately for over six years now and have played over 1000 live shows. Some of the bigger venues and festivals I have performed at are Mopop fest in Detroit, Lollapalooza in Chicago, Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport, NAMM conference in Anaheim and many more. As of recently, I graduated from Millersville University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelors of Science in Music Industry.
In the past six years, I have taught privately at the School of Rock in Downingtown and Guitar center in Lancaster. I have also done some group lessons with a Lancaster based nonprofit called Music For Everyone. I try to challenge my students every week with sight reading and ear training methods. Besides from drum set, I have access to congas, djembe's, marimbas, vibraphones and many other percussion instruments, so my students can grow not just as a drum set player, but as a percussionist as well.
For my beginner students, I usually start with how to properly hold the drumsticks. If a student doesn't have proper technique while playing the drums, they won't progress nearly as fast. I then like to go into learning rudiments and basic drum grooves. Once they start to get comfortable on a drum set, I'll throw in some basic sight reading. The books I mainly use are "Stick Control" by George Lawrence Stone, "The New Breed" by Gary Chester and "Syncopation" by Ted Reed. As my students progress, I will have them learn songs on the drum set by ear and by reading charts. I will also give them more difficult sight reading and limp independence exercises. Finally, I will show my students how to apply all of these methods to their own style of playing. At the end of the day, music is all about having fun and expressing yourself! And I am here to make sure my students do exactly that.
My overall goal as a teacher is to make my students better drummers than me. I want to challenge my students to the best of their abilities and see continual progress from them each week. Together we will set realistic goals for each lesson and i'll give my students material to work on at home before we meet again the following week. My teaching style depends on what motivates my students to learn. I understand that each student learns different and that some of my teaching material might respond to some of my students better than others. I have an endless amount of material for my students to use to grow and succeed and I will use that material to bring out each of my students true musical potential.
