I have played the Trumpet for 20 years and am passionate about music and teaching others the art of the instrument, as well as how to appreciate their craft. In 2014, I graduated from Eastern Washington University with a Bacherlor of Arts Degree in Music. I have performed with many famous artists and musicians, thanks to my wonderful college education including Doc Ferguson, Arturo Sandoval, MIke Sturm, Rex Richardson, and many others. I have had the opportunity to play among many wonderful players and conductors in varying musicals ranging from Fiddler on the Roof, to Hairspray. I have recently completed the Masters in Initial Teaching (MIT) program from Gonzaga and have used skills and techniques in my student teaching scenario and further instruction to enhance performance and trumpet pedagogy.
I have been teaching ever since I attained my Eagle Scout at 15 and reached adulthood with the Boy Scouts of America. My music teaching experience revolves around the private lessons I have given during college and beyond part time, as well as teaching sectionals and small groups for local churches when needed. I enjoy emphasizing the mental aspects of playing the Trumpet as well as combining a good embouchure, diligent breathing techniques and a serious dedication to hearing the sound inside ones mind before playing. Competitions and recitals are a wonderful expression of a students technique and capacity to learn and adapt, and I encourage my students to enter such performances in order to reinforce the techniques they have learned and gain self-esteem and motivation to continue with their musical careers.
For beginning students, I rely on methods books such as Essential Elements and Studies books in order for students starting off to grasp the fundamentals of Trumpet playing and music in general. Once that has been cemented, I will begin teaching a "routine" of practicing and warming up that will stick into the student's mind and further solidify their skills and techniques. Solo repertoire that is appropriate for the student's age will be introduced slowly and methodically as to give the student a challenging experience, but not be detrimental to their self-esteem or encourage bad habits (lack of practicing, bad breath support, awkward embouchure, etc). For adults I would ask what they are interested in accomplishing and help to build a supportive and reliable routine or repertoire they can practice and help augment their skills (if any are present). The foremost concept is to build a good foundation and to keep lessons fun and educational, no matter the age group.
Each student is a unique person with unique abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, each lesson must be tailored to that students needs and wants, whether they speak them or they are witnessed through their playing. Goals must be kept realistic and manageable, and praise must be given to those who accomplish their goals and make progress. Finding such inspiration, I can help the student achieve all that they desire in music. Enabling musician-levels of responsibility, accountability and pride in their own achievements to combat the ever-present "Ego" of all trumpet players, will translate to not only musical abilities and achievements, but a transformation into a respectful and dedicated member of society.
