MM, Rutgers University, Jazz Guitar Performance BM, Duquesne University, Jazz Guitar Performance
I am a active teacher, performer and composer in the greater NYC area. I love teaching and performing every chance I get so I can share my love of music with whoever will listen! In 2014, I graduated from Rutgers University with a Masters of Music degree in Jazz Guitar Performance. I have performed all over the east coast with many different groups and styles. Some highlights of my performing career have been playing in New York City with master jazz drummer Victor Lewis, and jazz saxophonist Ralph Bowen. I have also had the oppurtunity to perform with many different pop groups like The Drifters, The Skyliners, American Idol's Adam Brock Band among others. Recently I have let several groups including my original jazz group called the Tucker Flythe Quartet at Somethin' Jazz club in NYC, as well as a soul, funk, and rock and roll review band called Timi Kendrix. While doing all of this, I have also maintained an active teaching studio with as many as 30 students.
My teaching experience started in 2005 while still in high school, and I have been teaching consistently every since. While teaching I try to foster a fun and informative enviorment. For me playing guitar is one of the most fun and enjoyable things I've found. So teaching is my way of sharing the gift and joy that is music. I try to help students find that joy inside themselves too. Since I am so passionate about music I enjoy talking about it and sharing it with others which makes me engaging and enthusiastic teacher. I encourage students to practice and play guitar constantly! The best and quickest way to learn an instrument is to have it in your hands, whether they are working on a lesson from me or just exploring the instrument!
For beginning students who are children, I start them with Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book One. This book helps the student grasp the fundementals of the instrument by teaching them common songs as well as different exercises. Once the student has a grasp of the instrument I like to tailor my lessons to each specific student. We will learn popular songs together, explore music theory, and improvisation. For adults and older students, I like to find out what each students goal is. The two paths that are commonly chosen are the hobbiest and the advanced student. For someone who is interested in guitar as a hobby we will focus on learing songs that they enjoy listening to, and how to recreate the guitar riffs and solos they love. For the advanced student we will begin to learn the guitar on an indepth level. We will explore advanced techniques, improvising over top of the complex harmonies of jazz and modern music, and other advanced concepts and ideas of music.
Teaching music is a very rewarding profession. Watching students grow as I guide them to a more complete understanding of their instrument and music is very exciting and motivating. I try to set weekly goals for each of my students as well as long term goals so they can feel and see progress with each lesson. I try to take note and acknowledge when a student is progressing and tell them so they feel motivated to continue on to another level. Music is a gift that that everyone enjoys, but learning an instrument takes that enjoyment to a deeper level that lasts a lifetime!!!
