Whitworth University Private Instrument Scholarship 2016-2019
I'm a dedicated teacher who wants to give students the tools to succeed in all aspects of music. I don't just train players to hit the right notes, I teach theory, ear training skills, and everything else. Students with these skills are more capable of succeeding in playing music, and have a more versatile set of abilities that allows them to do more than recite what's on the page. I specialize in Classical Guitar, but I am willing and able to teach more popular styles as well. I received my Bachelor's Degree in music from Whitworth University in May 2019.
I began teaching practically as soon as I could play, starting when I was 13 years old. Since then, I have taught students on bass guitar, electric guitar, jazz, classical, and a variety of other forms of music. Classical is my area of expertise, which I performed throughout my undergraduate career. However, I have participated in performing bands in genres from rock to folk to reggae, and I am comfortable with almost any style of music. In my teaching, I often seek to bridge the gap between genres and allow students to explore.
I begin my Classical students with the Julian Sagreras guitar method book, then move into the Aaron Shearer Learning the Classic Guitar series. Once students have a firm grasp of the fundamentals, we begin on solo repertoire. For contemporary styles, I prefer to start complete beginners on the Hal Leonard guitar method books, and then I encourage them to seek out artists that they enjoy. In all of my lessons, students will analyze chord structures, sing and dictate melodies, and learn history about the guitar and general music. All of my students will also be given plenty of opportunities to have fun! Part of the joy of music is using your skills to explore and enjoy what you are doing, and students that truly love playing guitar are far more likely to keep playing.
I am enthusiastic about music, and my primary goal is to pass that enthusiasm on to my students. I work with students to discover what they are passionate about, and then pursue that passion with them. If students display an interest in a particular subject, I am always willing to follow that path. Goals are a big part of my lessons, but they will be established according to what the student can handle. I also deeply believe that teachers and students should respect each other mutually, and that respect comes from harmony and not anger. I will push my students to improve, but always in a positive and encouraging manner.
