University of Massachusetts Lowell-Bachelor of Music Performance
Overview:
I am a very passionate music teacher, it's really who I am. I thrive off of opening the doors of music to people new to playing an instrument and teaching them a foundation upon which to grow. I graduated from UMASS Lowell with a Bachelors in Music Performancein 2014 and have 9 years of teaching experience in and around the Boston area. I play and manage a band called Skyfoot and have for about 6 years now. I have played in 35 different states, playing with all kinds of musicians across the United States. The times I spent playing and learning from the musicians at school and on the road have been some of the most insightful of my life.
EXPERIENCE
I have been playing music for 15 years and have over6 years of experience teaching in my home studio and at students homes. I started teaching right before entering college in andaround the Boston area.In addition to guitar and bass, i also am experienced in drums, piano and voice. I was self taught untill i started taking lessons at around age 16. At 19 i began studying with my teacher at UMASS and gained a wealth of musical knowledge. I encompass his lesson plan into my own as much as possible because it was his teachings that got me to where I am today. I find with my students that a healthy balance of practicing fundamentals and practicing pieces of music that they are very passionate about produces a great deal of inspiration and fuels their creative process. I encourage my students to enter competitions and recitals, as well as compose their own material. I also find that seeing my students start to write their own material really gives them confidence in their own abilities! I make sure my lessons plans are fun and interactive, because playing music should be!
METHODS USED
For beginner students who are children, I typically start with theSuzuki Book 1 or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements depending on the students wants/needs. Throughout the lessonsI will coverbasictheory such as chords, scales, and other guitar/piano/drums/bass fundamentals neccesary to grow. For adults, I like to do a thorough interview to get a feel for what it is they want out guitar/bass/piano/drum lessons and from that develop a lesson plan based on the lessons i was taught by my music teacher in college.
LESSON STYLE
One of the greatest joys of teachingis to see that lightbulb go on when my students really start to pick things up and the excitement they getin seeing and hearing their own musical growth! I like to have my students set realistic goals for themselves which help to inspire them when they meet a goal with flying colors! Myteaching methods involve basic theory, sight reading, ear training, picking techniques, and many other aspects. I specialize in finger style guitar therfore i like to spend a small portion introducing students to different kinds of picking techniques. Ialsoexplore improvisation and song structure concepts in variousdifferent styles of music. I like to dedicate a portion of the end of the lesson time to something the student has really wanted to learn that week; like a specific song, lick, or concept . Hope to hear from you, thanks!
