Overview:
My name is Tyler! I'm from Pennsylvania, where I learned music from an early age! I started formal percussion/drumset, piano, and guitar lesons at age 8 and I have not stopped! Music became my life shortly after then. I eventually left high school senior year to enroll in cyber school because I joined a pop rock girl-fronted band. We were very grateful to have toured the country playing under some of music's biggest bands every night. I applied to the Unviersity of the Arts and subsequently left the band to pursue higher education within music. I studied classical/jazz vocal performance and music education for 3 years, then switched my major to Music Business for the last 2 full years. I graduated in May and made the big move to Los Angeles to continue my spirutal journey. My learning and performing experiences reflect my teaching pedagogies and approaches!
EXPERIENCE
My personal teaching experience began while studying in Phladelphia at teh Unviersity of the Arts. As I started my 5 year Music Education minor/clearence program, I started to adapt what I was learning and develop my own style and flow of teaching. I began tutoring my friends and fellow classmates after school in the music library on campus, teaching them compex jazz theory, ProTools/Logic DAW shortcuts and processes, piano accompaniment, intervals, inversions,  rhythmic dictation, bascally reinforcing what we learned earlier in the class. This continued, grew and developed throughout my 5 year tenure. As required by music education minors, we had to participate in finding an accredited school system and observe for one year and assist for one year. I was fortunate to discover String Theory Charter School in Center City Philadelphia and began walking to the school every morning before my classes started, sitting in the back of the classroom taking notes and shadowing the orchestral and vocal teachers as they went about their morning classes, absorbing as much information as I could. This went on for months, at which time I spent my last year of college assisting both teachers in the field as they taught their classes! I began taking mroe of a central role and the teachers were nice enough to let me take the lead some days. This experience surely brought me out of my shell, standing in front of 40 middle school children!
METHODS USED
The methods have to suit the child and vice versa. I like to began all students by really getting to know their (and their parents') ability, history, desires, needs, wants, ect. I like to base my teaching pedagogy purely around the child, the family, and their learning skills. Everybody is different and it's my job to explore all avenues that the student wants to accomplish in their musical experience. I have taken classes and studied Kodaly, Suzuki, and various other psychological approaches to education. In addition to the pedagogical studies, I was deeply moved by my two semesters of Music for Special Children where we learned to really inspect the human brain function and how different people learn and create. These classes and real-world experience combined with my personal music teachings, have helped develop my own teaching method!
LESSON STYLE
Teaching style could easily be summaried and paraphrased with my above stated pedagogy! Teaching style changes from student to teacher. I enjoy trying to decipher what the student enjoys hearing, wants to learn, prior knowledge, and desires are. These help in my search to find the perfect style at which the student understands and enjoys the task at hand.
