I’m a passionate and motivated instructor who loves sharing that passion with students. I’ve been playing upright and electric bass for 24 years. I’ve studied and performed a variety of different styles, including classical, jazz, musical theatre, pop, rock, soul, funk, country etc. I graduated 2011 from Penn State University with a Bachelors of Music focused on bass performance, and I graduated 2014 from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a Masters in Music Performance. Since graduating I’ve performed with Symphonic orchestras serving as Principle Bass for the Cheyenne Symphony and Associate Principle Bass for the Greeley Philharmonic. I’ve toured the world on luxury cruise lines including: Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. I’ve served as an artists side/touring musician for Engelbert Humperdinck, Judy Collins and Shirley Jones.
My teaching experience dates back to when I was obtaining my Masters of Music Performance degree at the University of Colorado. There I served as a teaching assistant to my bass professor teaching private lesson in both upright and electric bass to undergraduate students. I also had to coach bass sectionals to the bass major students, focusing heavily on major orchestral repertoire and going into the detail of the minutiae. I also had to coach chamber groups which involved bass ensemble work, getting bassist to play together and listen to details of ensemble playing.
I customize my teaching to the individual based on their experience and expectations. We will always establish a solid form of technique on the instrument: for electric bass that being fretting hand drills and exercises getting used to getting around the fretboard, and right hand drills practicing alternating plucking. In addition to that we’ll dive into harmonic structure: learning the notes of the fretboard and the coo responding scales/arpeggios/chords that go with them. However, Most important is that the student is musically inspired, so after given this foundation we’ll always spend a portion of the lesson taking a deep dive learning music they want to learn; both how to play it and the concepts surrounding its conception.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.. We’ll do a deep dive on every musical aspect of what inspires any given student.
