Hi my name is Tyler. I have been playing music for over 20 years and have been teaching for 13. I love playing many styles of music, from funk, to pop, to extreme metal. I believe an open musical mind leads to great things. I graduated from Musicians Institute in Los Angeles in 2009. There I was able to work with many great teachers and learn a wide variety of techniques and styles. I love composing music, especially metal and soundtrack type music, and have released five albums between two bands. I currently record and tour in the Extreme Sci Fi Metal band Xoth. We released our 2nd full length album "Interdimensional Invocations" in October 19, and I was blow away by the international resonance to the album.
I have been teaching music since I was 18 years old and have been doing it as my only source of income since 2010. The majority of my teaching was at a music school where I did individual lessons and seasonal group sessions. There I would pick 18-25 songs, cast students on parts, work on the songs for 3-4 months, and then put on a big concert. A few examples of shows I have directed are Iron Maiden, best of the 80s, Prog Rock, Global Metal, History of Punk, Grunge, Motown, Soundtracks show (music from film, TV, and video games), Devo, Rush, and many many more.
I have spent the last few years creating many exercises, scale sheets, chord sheets, and theory resources. First I make sure that you have all of the essential foundations down and then we will work on implementing them and taking things to the next level. We will learn lots of cool licks, work on improvisation, learn classic and deep cut songs, and go over lots of great techniques. I have all of my students learn how to build chords, scales, and arpeggios all over the neck. Starting with the pentatonic scales, then moving onto the modes and arpeggios. I will analyze your playing and goals and we will find the best path for your musical journey.
My style of teaching is all built around assisting students in finding their own musical voice. I love using theory and technique as a means to unlock each student's full musical potential. I have developed a good method that is enjoyable and easy to understand. Learning the basics of theory like intervals, harmony, scales, and arpeggios is super important. The other main thing is to learn how to organize the fretboard. Many books and teaching styles over-complicate this, and it makes learning the fretboard take much longer. Through exercises, learning songs, and improvisation we will go over how to take these elements and implement them in a musical fashion.
