Overview:
I'm a 41 year old Father and Pastor. I've been doing music for the last 30 years. I started off playing the drums in my father's church. Growing up a pastor's kid was good but demanding. I was always in church so music was a natural thing for me. I learned early on the the piano and vocals where my instruments of choice. I started in the church but my formal music training began in high school and college. I went to Kentucky State University on a music scholarship. I've traveled the world doing my passion and I feel so blessed.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching goes all the way back to the late 80's . I began teaching the piano and drums to my little brother. I just turned 41 so it has to be about 30 years ago. I got my formal instruction in classical music in High School. That is where I developed a real passion for classical music, and opera. I went to Kentucky State University on a music scholarship. While there I was in several operas. Tannhauser, Porgy and Bess, and Amahl and the Night Visitors just to name a few. For the last 20 years I have been leading worship.
METHODS USED
There are so many methods to use. I started off in the church as a worship leader, piano player, and a drummer. I believe in learning to read music and playing by ear. It is a reason why I teach both. Ear training is good for a lot of churches if you decide to play or sing in one. Not all churches use hymn books but some do so that's why I teach site reading as well. I think you limit yourself as a musician or vocalist if you can't read music. For site reading I prefer Alfred, Faber, Bastien, and Hal Leonard.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style ranges from student to student. For example I love to see my students develop whether they're coming to me as a beginner, basic, intermediate, or advanced student. If I have a gospel vocal student, I work with them on rifts and runs. If I have a classical piano student I work with them on fingering techniques. I'm doing site reading for piano students or drummers. We use flash cards daily to keep the site reading fresh. Theory is something that we go over on a daily basis. If you're ready I'm ready.

He's an amazing teacher. He really knows his music. My daughter couldn't even find middle C after her last teacher. She can read and play music fluently now. She can also play by ear. I would highly recommend Van as a music teacher.
