Overview:
I am passionate about continuing the education of music in our society. In spring 2014 I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a BM. I’ve performed with churches, college Rock and Jazz ensembles, and recorded for several local groups. I enjoy Jazz, Latin, and World music. Students will find that I am a delightful person to be with. The joy of teaching, for me, is watching students grow in their abilities.
EXPERIENCE
My first student in 2002 was 13 years old. Ever since then I’ve taught students ranging in age from 10 to 43. Most of the students studied drum kit with several showing interest in hand drums. The styles I’ve taught included Rock, Funk, Latin, Jazz, and Reggae. I always encourage my students to explore other styles of music. While my students are learning how to play they also benefit from studying music notation and theory. A flexible mind makes for flexible creativity!
METHODS USED
Each and every student who takes lessons from me is an individual. My focus in the beginning is on technique for sticks/hands/mallets. I also focus on body mechanics to help students be comfortable when playing the percussion instrument. When it comes to learning grooves and soloing concepts, I introduce students to a variety of styles. If a student shows interest in one, that particular style will be developed. It is my belief that students should be proficient in as many styles as possible. Reading music is important, and it part of my program. In each lesson I introduce a musical term and or concept while encouraging students to practice and improve knowledge on what already has been learned.
LESSON STYLE
To offer my students a safe environment to learn and to experiment, to make mistakes, and to achieve goals is very important to me. I love watching students grow in their confidence, and by feeling safe they will indeed grow in confidence. I am a caring, smiling professional whose primary focus is the benefit of his students. Students will find that materials are taught based on the time they need to learn it.
