Bachelor Degree: Williams College
I am a motivated and passionate flute instructor who loves working with students of all different ages and backgrounds. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music and in Psychology from Williams College and have been playing the flute since I was 9. I have performed in various ensembles such as the Berkshire Symphony Orchestra, the I/o New Music Festival, various musical theatre pit orchestras, and the Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble at the New England Conservatory. In fall of 2022 I traveled to Vienna, Austria to study flute performance, chamber music, and composition. I was a finalist in the International Music Competition and a Platinum Awardee in the Beethoven Music Competition. I have also had the great privilege of performing at the La Melodieuse festival with composer Yuko Uebayashi and flutist Carol Wincenc. Notable teachers include Jacqueline DeVoe, Furugh Karimi, Ulrike Anton, Jessica Lizak, and Ellen Bender.
My teaching career started during college when I began teaching virtual private flute lessons during the pandemic. Since then, I have held teaching positions at various summer programs teaching music to elementary school children. My main goals in teaching are to ensure that the student is having fun and enjoying the music that they play and that classical music and instrumental instruction are accessible to students of all backgrounds. My students are encouraged to participate in competitions, recitals, and workshops. As I am also trained in music theory and composition, I encourage students to explore these aspects of music alongside performance.
For all students, I encourage them to use Trevor Wye practice books, which include my favorite Reichert and Taffanel & Gaubert exercises, warmups, and etudes. While learning the fundamentals, I have some beginner-level pieces and etudes to help hone these skills before students move onto more advanced repertoire. I like to guide my teaching according to the styles and composers that students are interested in to ensure that my students enjoy what they are playing first and foremost. I also like to make sure my students understand the fundamentals of music theory to become better at reading music.
I tailor my teaching to what my students want to learn and what kinds of music they are interested in. I try to teach my students the fundamentals in order to succeed. While I do teach repertoire, my main goals are to foster a passion for music and the ability to approach new music my students may encounter. I try to leave my students with effective practice methods and a basic understanding of music theory in addition to flute skills. I want my students to go into the world with a passion for music and the eagerness and ability to learn new music in different contexts.
