I am a passionate and dedicated instruction who loves working with students and sharing my love of music with others. I was classically trained through private lessons since the age of 5, and I very much enjoy leading worship at my church, as well as bringing my love of music to kids' birthday parties and corporate events.
I have spent over 10 years teaching preschool and working in a myriad of educational settings, ranging from public and private schools to nonprofits and camp settings. My piano teaching experience dates back about 5 years to when I began passing on my love of music to my own father. My philosophy in teaching is to encourage a love of music and more specifically, the process of learning! Once a love of learning is cultivated, students can take that anywhere.
I typically begin by teaching students how to visiually identify the keys on the piano, as well as notes on sheet music. Then I like to begin to work on finger shape when playing, as well as basic scales. As we continue practicing with the fundamentals, I like to pick simple identifiable songs for students to move into next. Easily recognizable melodies make the learning process easier, more attainable to the student, and fun!
Cultivating a love of learning, and a love of music, is the most important part of any lesson. One can be the most masterful and technically skilled musician, but if he/she hates to play, we will never hear the beautiful music. I believe that above all else, students really need to develop a love for learning, and the teacher has a unique qualification and responsibility of developing that love. Positive reinforcement and encouragement is important during the delicate process of learning.
