My musical background is a combination of music performance and music education. As a professional music educator both at secondary Level (middle school & high school) and the college level, I strive to focus on the musical aspects of my teaching. Two of my degrees are in Music Education with an emphasis in Performance and I believe in combining both the educational aspects of learning with the performance aspects of learning. In this way I hope formy students to value the importance of both so that they can both play the music and, at the same time, understand the background of the music they are learning.
My private Trumpet teaching experience dates back to my post college days. I am passionate about both playing and teaching Trumpet and hope to share all the knowledge and experience I have with other trumpet players. My teachers include: Rudy Nashan (former Chicago Symphony Orchestra) Dan Sapochetti (former Syracuse Symphony) Stenley Rosenzweig (former Radio City Music Hall Orchestra) William Vacchiano (former New York Philharmonic) William Vaccaro (former NY professional trumpeter) Joyce Davis (University of Florida Professor of Trumpet)
I generally like to star from where the student is. For beginners through intermediate, I like to start with the basic exercises to include using the Arban Conservatory Method for Trumpet and work on the fundamentals of good tone quality and good intonation. From there I like to work on clean technique while incorporating easy to difficult pieces of music to highlight and reinforce what techniques we are learning/improving. Once I am comfortable with a solid foundation of Trumpet fundamentals I will add solo trumpet literature into the lessons and assignments so that there is a balance between technical exercises and trumpet literature. From there I guide my lessons on how to properly practice between the lessons so that there is a steady progress throughout. I also invite the student, once proper technique is learned is not already, to suggest pieces of music that they are interested n which I will incorporate into the lessons.
My teaching style is to go at the student's pace but also to gently encourage and motivate all along the way. In this way, the students has the incentive to work at their own pace while I try to move the momentum along. The whole idea is to have fun while learning and to motivate each other by learning and playing music together. My additional teaching style is to also listen to music together and assign trumpeters to listen to. in this way the student is able to hear what other trumpet players sound like and can hopefully acquire the sound they like and want in their ear to emulate it in their own sound. Listening is a big part of learning, especially in Trumpet playing. While a "picture is worth a thousand words," a "sound is also worth a thousand words."
