2012 - 2013 High School District Certificated Employee of the Year
Overview:
I began my musical life in elementary school approximately thirty years ago. I have tried to experience every faucet of performance that I could get my hands on. I have performed for several different ensembles that range from a marching band, to a concert band, to an orchestra to singing in a university choir. I graduated from the University of Redlands with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and am currently working on a graduate degree. I have had the opportunity to play all over the United States, Europe and the Middle East which was life changing. My hope is to impress my passion for music and performance to all my students.
EXPERIENCE
My experience working with student musicians spans twenty years! I have worked with all grade levels, beginning with elementary school through the first audition to a college/university. I am currently a high school band director and am able to work with many students that are learning various instruments. My lessons are comprehensive and fun. I enjoy encouraging my students to make musical moments memorable and grow as a person. I also encourage my students to take risks by auditioning for local honor bands and solo festivals. If you are ready to work and make wonderful music, lets go!
METHODS USED
For the beginning student, I begin with the fundamentals of breathing and application to the first tone. I spend the first three to four lessons developing good habits of proper air and tone production. Following this, I begin with using the approved method book that correlates with the instruction that the student is receiving at school. If there is no method book available, I will begin with a discussion with my student and decide together what method book is best for their education. For the non-beginner, I use the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced Method Books and supplement them with etudes and solo repertoire that will help them learn and grow.
LESSON STYLE
Learning a musical instrument is not a race, it is a process that takes time. We will learn and progress at our own pace. Each lesson will be designed for realistic results and to build on each of them. Each milestone will be acknowledged and celebrated, encouraging my students to want to lean more. I will work with parents as to how they can support their children through this process and encourage them to work independently away from lessons. I believe that student and parents are a part of this process and all of us need to collaborate for the success of the student.
