I am an enthusiastic and dedicated music teacher who loves introducing young children to the wondrous world of music. I come from a very musical family as my father instilled in me a great love of piano and I have in turn inspired my nephew who is also a musician. I graduated from Southwestern University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. I have always had a good rapport with my students and I get great satisfaction watching my students advance in their musical proficiency.
In the early years of my teaching profession I taught in various small Texas school districts. I taught in Houston ISD for over 25 years. I have taught PK – fifth grade students throughout my career. I initiated a piano lab at my last school for second grade students. I employed creativity and fun in my mission to expose my students to the use of various percussion instruments. I also developed, planned, and executed live performances and recitals.
For my novice students I will use the John W. Schaum piano course. We will begin with scales and arpeggios. Once these students have grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire appropriate for their first solo recital. My goal is to instill in them an appreciation for the classical music of the 18th and 19th century such as that of the Three B’s (Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms).
There is nothing is more gratifying to me than seeing my students cultivate a passion for music. It is imperative that each student advance at their own rate. I will help each student set realistic goals for themselves. Acknowledging their accomplishments and encouraging their individual musical interests helps further fuel the students desire to succeed.
