Bachelor Degree: University of Illinois at Chicago
I'm a passionate musician who eats, sleeps, and breathes music. The minute I had a guitar in my hand since I was 14, I never stopped falling in love with the instrument. While I graduated in 2015 with a Bachelors of Science degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago, I was performing with local musicians around the area and taking jazz lessons with faculty and students within the university. Since moving to Detroit at the end of 2015, I have become integrated within the local Detroit music scene, playing with two bands currently, which have played music festivals such as the Hamtramck Music Festival and the Detroit Concert of Colors. I have also performed out of the country for mini tours in the Ontario province of Canada, such as Toronto and Hamilton. I am currently being a student myself in learning the genre of Flamenco that originates from Spain.
While fairly new to teaching private lessons, I have taught musicians I have played with and other family members, friends, and others. I have encouraged everyone I have taught practical uses of the instrument that relates the music theory found in specific genres to more comprehensible techniques to use on the guitar. I take popular songs that are familiar to the student, and use the songwriting to help show the practicality and musical nature of theory. When the student succeeds and nails down the passage, I encourage them greatly for their accomplishment. When they struggle with a section, I encourage them to keep trying and be patient, giving them the chance top succeed without judgement. I am there to help with any question, and will research any questions I cannot answer off hand.
My teaching methods are based on what interests the student. For beginning students, I begin my lessons with the basics of the instrument and use beginning method books for basic techniques. In addition, I choose some basic popular songs to give them an excitement for what they are learning. For students who have a bit more familiarity with the instrument, I tailor my lessons to the needs of the student. Whatever genre they are interested, techniques they want to learn, or music theory they want to learn, I will create my lesson plan to focus on those topics
My teaching style is to help one discover a love for music. When I was learning, the best way I got excited was by learning through what I liked. That helped me get excited for playing music, and more interested in learning the complexities in music. By acknowledging what the student likes and their strengths, I can help focus them on how to reach the dreams they desire. I give my students a positive attitude with no judgement of their skill level. As the student progresses, I acknowledge how far they have come, and congratulate the successes they have accomplished. Learning music can be tough, and I want to help give the student as much positivity and love for music so they do not feel discouraged,.
