Award for exceptional achievement
I love piano! I am finishing a second Master's degree in Piano Performance at Austin Peay State University (anticipated graduation - December 2015). I completed a DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) degree in music composition/piano/musicology in 2001 and am active as a composer/arranger in the Nashville area. I also hold a Master's degree in music ministry and have served as minister of music and minister of music and youth in churches in Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana. I play trombone in the Nashville Praise Symphony and with the Robertson County Community Band. I sing with the Tennessee Men's Chorale and the Robertson County Choral Society. It has been my joy to perform on music mission trips to: Panama, Brazil, Wales and Greece.
I teach courses and lessons in piano, music theory and music appreciation at Volunteer State Community College at the rank of Assistant Professor (five years now). I taught courses in music theory while earning my Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky (1997-2000). My experience as a professional pianist includes: serving with the 101st Division Band (Army) as a pianist (1982-85), staff accompanist at East Tennessee State University (1993), and collaborative pianist for the Interlochen Arts Camp (summer of 2011).
I like to use piano methods that employ the multi-key and intervallic approach to teaching piano. Alfred's Piano Method nicely blends these two methods. To keep book costs down, the Alfred's All-in-One Piano Method (children's or adult's) is a good choice for beginning students. Alfred's method is also used by many universities and community colleges, so what you learn will nicely carry over to that environment. More advanced students can bring the method and materials they have been working with and we'll go from there.
Not only will I teach you how to play piano . . . I will teach you how to read and play printed music. Learning to "play by ear" only teaches you how to play a few songs . . . learning to read music opens the door to a vast library of printed piano music! In addition to your method book, we will work on technique (finger exercises for strength and flexibility), theory (what makes music work), and repertoire (performance pieces). We can add any style or piece you want to learn, too. You will need an instrument to practice on. It is much better to practice a little every day, than try to cram for a lesson at the end of the week. Your success depends largely on your ability to practice regularly. That said, let's have fun, let's learn to play the piano!
