Master of Music Arts
I am a lover of music that has always enjoyed sharing it with others. I have been involved in musical activities all through since grade school. I graduated with a Master of Music Arts with a specialty in teaching from Texas Woman's University so I could better share my love of music. I have also been in one choir or another over the years. I sang with the Denton Community Chorus, Nairobi Concert Choir and had the privilege of performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the Texas Woman's University Concert Choir.
I have been teaching music since I was a teenager. I started with my neighborhood friends, and later at a school of music, where I also hosted showcase concerts for my students. I then went into private teaching in 2009, and have been teaching student of all ages at their homes. I also taught high school choir, which was a life changing experience for me, as it gave me new insight to older children and how musical tastes evolve as they grow older. I also stepped in as a bass player for my students at their annual pop show.
When I start with a student, we immediately start working on sight-reading, as I believe it is a very important skill to have. Even the beginners students, all start sight-reading right off the bat, and build on the skill as they progress. As we go along with our lessons, we add on new concepts and integrate those into what is already learned, as well as incorporate them into music the student enjoys. I also love to organize annual show case concerts, where my students can meet each other and also demonstrate what they have been learning to their parents.
One of the things I love about teaching is watching my students grasp the musical concepts I teach, as well as see how they all relate. Each student progresses at their own pace, some faster, some slower than others. I tweak my teaching style to meet each student's unique abilities, so as to assist them in reaching their potential. Together with teaching my students the basic concepts of music, I also work with them on musical concepts and types of music that they are interested in. I incorporate the basics of music I teach into the music my students love, to help them grasp quicker.
