Overview:
I'm an ardent and compassionate instructor who enjoys sharing the gift of music with children and adults. Music enriches the communities in which we live and expands our capacity to connect with humanity. I studied privately with Philip J. Teibel of the Buffalo Philharmonic from childhood through High School. I toured the Southeast US with the Oberlin College Choir and Orchestra in college. Since graduation, I've had the opportunity to perform with numerous ensembles including: Soulful Symphony and the Baltimore Symphony at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Strathmore Music Center in North Bethesda. I have performed as concertmaster and soloist with Michael W. Smith and the McLean Bible Church Orchestra.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began while attending graduate school 30 years ago. I have been teaching consistently in my home studio and with the Liya Foundation Summer Music Camp for the past 6 years. At the Liya Summer Camp, I conduct private lessons, sectionals, and assist with orchestra rehearsals. I am a patient, fun loving violin instructor who believes in stretching a student's growth. I emphasize disciplined, consistent practice to improve skills but do not expect perfection. In my opinion, no one ever completely masters the violin. You must remain open and teachable for continued growth.
METHODS USED
My beginners generally start with the "All For Strings" series to obtain the basic elements of violin playing. This curriculum provides students with virtually every phase of beginning through intermediate string study. I introduce solo repertoire that matches the musical interest of each student. I also guide my intermediate students through study of their current Middle School or High School orchestral repertoire. With adults, I endeavor to combine their tastes and interests with musical literature that is fun and sustains interest such as Mazas and Viotti duets.
LESSON STYLE
I have a customized approach to instruction that keeps pace with the student's skill level and ability. Goal setting is an important activity that I use to sustain interest and encouragement. For example, we may decide together that we will attempt to master a particular inspiring piece of music by a specific date. Naturally, the date will be reset depending upon the student's progress. I like to incorporate contemporary music into the lesson so that my students can see that the violin can be used widely in various musical genre. My instructor provided the same opportunity to me as we studied classic hits composed by Burt Bacharach along with Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms.

I met Wayman a few years ago at a church music rehearsal. I immediately recognized his talent, but mostly his kindness, and I was very impressed with the way he related to people. I asked him if I he could take me as a student, and so I started lessons with him. He is very professional — on time and organized. I have had many wonderful teachers, but he tops the list! It took him no time to find my strengths and weaknesses, and he taught me to play so much better—to relax, and enjoy playing music. I have learned so much from his expertise! I would highly recommend him.

After 2 years of absence I decided to take up the violin again. I dreaded trying to find a teacher with whom I would connect with. I found Wayman through Musikalessons and after meeting Wayman I knew I didn’t have to search any further. Wayman is very talented and an awesome instructor. Very patient, knowledgeable, and nurturing. If you are in search of an awesome Instructor look no further. Highly recommend!

I am Mr. Wayman’s student his lessons have really taught me a lot of skills and techniques which have led me to improve in the violin a lot. He teaches a variety of music and is very flexible and kind.

I have known and performed with Wayman for years, so when I was looking for a private teacher for my teenage daughter, I thought that he would be a good instructor for my shy, sensitive young violinist who really needed a confidence boost. Wayman has been a godsend. My daughter has achieved success after success auditioning for different groups and her confidence, skill level, communication, and leadership skills have grown tremendously under his tutelage. He has a unique way of connecting with her. He adjust, adapts his style, and listens in such an artful manner. We even recently conducted a last minute Zoom conference lesson just prior to another successful audition. I am thrilled that I connected her with Wayman. He is incredible!!
