Thirty years experience teaching beginning through advanced brass students
I have over 30 years experience teaching brass students of all ages and ability levels, from beginners to advanced players. I love teaching and seeing my students progress!! Blessed with a varied and interesting music career, I have traveled all over the world, performed with many amazing musicians, and most importantly, been lucky enough to have shared my love of music and teaching with many wonderful students over the years. Enthusiasm, patience, persistence, and good communication skills have all allowed me to help brass players understand their musical challenges and live up to their potential.
From the beginning of my musical career I have combined performing and teaching as two sides of the same coin. As trombonist in America's first full time brass chamber ensemble (Annapolis Brass Quintet), I toured and recorded internationally and taught private lessons and chamber ensembles around the world. Early on, it became apparent that my love of teaching rivaled that of performing, and I have a special affinity for teaching younger students, because the learning curve is so much steeper and faster! My teaching experience ranges from concerts, clinics and private lessons in public schools, to full time positions at Shenandoah Conservatory and the University of Kansas, as well as one year at the Baltimore School for the Arts. I also have a busy private studio of trombonists, euphonium, and beginning to intermediate trumpet players.
I start all beginning brass players in the Tradition of Excellence method (Kjos Music) as well as individually designed drills and warm-ups. Intermediate students progress to the Rubank Intermediate Method as well as the beginning of the Arbans Method and grade 1 -3 solos. Depending on the individual, advanced students move on to grades 4-6 solos and method books that are specific to their instrument. All students, starting with "advanced beginners" are encouraged to play on studio recitals in a positive, supportive setting. Constructive feedback, as well as a social support network of like-minded students, are important elements in my studio. For adult students, the lesson material and methods are guided by their personal interests and goals, as well as specific technical challenges.
My teaching style is guided by several simple principles: 1. Its all about two things; the MUSIC and RELATIONSHIPS. 2. It has to be FUN, or why do it? 3. Nothing is more satisfying (and fun) than getting better at playing an instrument. 4. To get better (and have more fun) you have got to WORK at it. (Hello, practice room!) 5. In order to motivate and help the student progress, I get to know the student as well as possible, model good playing and practice habits ( I play during lessons a LOT, and draw up sample practice plans for students depending on their needs and interests), help them establish GOALS, and use ENTHUSIASM, PATIENCE, PERSISTENCE, and EXPERIENCE to guide them along their musical journey.
