My name is Wes and I am a violin and viola teacher who is passionate about playing, working with students, and sharing my own passion for music with other people. I started playing the violin in 2006 and started taking lessons with a talented member of the Sarasota Orchestra. In 2008, I became the Concertmaster of the Chamber Strings Orchestra, a part of the Sarasota Youth Orchestra Program. A few years later, I was a second violinist for the Youth Philharmonic with whom I performed at the van Wezel in Sarasota, Florida at the end of the 2010 season. I was also a member of my own Church's string group, the Manatee Strings, for five years. We performed at various venues across Manatee and Sarasota Counties. Some of my fondest memories as a musician were playing solos for my church, and with the Manatee Strings.
My experience teaching the violin began in my junior year of high school in 2011; my orchestra teacher had me work with my fellow classmates by guiding sectionals, aiding them in practicing the repertoire that was played during class. After I graduated from high school, I started giving both in-person and online lessons to people wishing to pick up the violin or the viola. In order to strengthen their skills as musicians, I encourage all of my students to practice consistently in order to see the most improvement. When students start seeing results, it motivates them to continue practicing and their passion for the violin grows. Helping students work towards their goals while watching enjoy every step of the way is what I believe being a teacher is all about!
For my younger students, I typically start them out with the Essential Elements (Hal Leonard) book. As the student progresses through the book, I will introduce pieces of repertoire that reflect the student's abilities. Students are more than welcome to share music that they would like to learn, which is important in maintaining their passion for playing. For my adult students, I typically work with them on songs of their choice and guide them on how to play it on their instrument. I always strive to make my lessons fun and engaging for all of my students! The most important part of playing the violin, or any instrument, is that it brings you joy.
I believe that learning a musical instrument is a personal journey; a journey that happens at your own pace. During each lesson, I work with the student at a pace they are comfortable with while setting attainable goals and making the lesson fun! When a student's accomplishments are acknowledged, it not only makes them eager to progress further, but it boosts their confidence, which can spill over to other areas of their lives. When I learn what a student's goals are, I can guide them in the direction they need in order to succeed!
