I am a flutist, improviser, and composer with a bachelors degree in Jazz Flute Performance from the New England Conservatory of music. As a past member of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and a Bruce Montgomery Foundation Springboard Grant winner, I am experienced in classical competitions at the middle/high school level. At NEC, I worked in both the jazz and classical department, studying with great musicians such as Renee Krimsier, Jerry Bergonzi, Frank Carlberg, Joe Morris, and Jason Moran. I am experienced in Classical flute, jazz flute, improvisation, and composition.
I began teaching as a young kid in middle and high school. I would give informal lessons to my peers, and this is what started my interest in teaching. I continued this path teaching classical flute and jazz improvisation to anyone who would listen to me! In college, I worked with the saxophone players in the jazz department helping them develop their flute sound as a doubles instrument. Now, I am teaching private lessons in the Philadelphia area to all ages and abilities! I can help with competition material, jazz repertoire and improvisation, as well as anything else in the flute world you may be interested in!
I like to work with each student based on their musical preferences. I have a basic set of books to work through that help with tone development and technique, but my main focus is helping the student develop the sound they want and discover what style of music is best for them. Whether you’d re interested in baroque, classical, or 20th century flute I will have repertoire to work on. If you are more interested in improvisation, I have extensive knowledge on many different methods of improvisation. I do make custom student plans for each student.
I hope to work with students in the areas they want to focus on while also providing materials for overall musical development. If a student wants to work on one specific style, be it classical, jazz, or pop oriented music, I will show them the music, materials, and methods required for mastery in that subject. Along with this subject-specific teaching, I will also teach about the history of the flute and all styles that it might be used in. This gives students the opportunity to find the music they are passionate about and learn in the best way for them.
