Overview:

I have been a music teacher for over 25 years and have taught music at all levels from kindergarten through college both in the United States and abroad in the Caribbean, Japan, and Africa..  I have experience teaching many different kinds of music including general music, elementary/junior high/high school band, junior high and high school choir, jazz band, orchestra, and hand bells.While I can teach beginner level students on all band instruments, my specialties are the brass instruments with a special emphasis on trumpet and French horn.  I also love playing the recorder and have taught several students to excel on that instrument as well

EXPERIENCE

Throughout my music teaching career, I have enjoyed watching students progress on their instruments in both proficiency and their love of playing.  I enjoy watching their weekly improvement on both the solo and ensemble level and encourage them to perform often in a variety of settings to build their confidence in public performance whether that be as members of school bands and ensembles or in public recitals showcasing their progress to both parents and friends

METHODS USED

For beginning students whose primary goal is membership in a school performance ensemble, I will usually choose a beginning band method that give them a good foundation in fundamental playing techniques.  As they gain basic skills at this level, I expand the content of lessons to include easy solo repertoire.  For older and adult beginning students, I usually use instrumental methods more suited for older learners.  In addition, I incorporate easy solo literature for public performance.

LESSON STYLE

As long as a student truly wants to learn and excel on their instrument, I believe I can help him or her achieve that goal.  Their goal becomes my goal and it gives me great satisfaction to help them gain the musical and instrumental skills they need to reach their goal, whatever that may be.  I consider myself a patient and nurturing teacher who will try various teaching pedagogies to help a student learn the skills necessary to be successful in their instrumental music education.
