Overview:
I'm a classical guitarist from San Diego, and I love teaching the guitar as much as I love playing it. I have my Bachelor of Music in Classical Guitar Performance from California State University Northridge where I studied with John Dearman, a founding member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. In school I was chosen by faculty to play with the CSUN Honorary Guitar Quartet. We were invited to perform at the regional symposium for the Guitar Foundation of America. I also served as President of the CSUN Classical Guitar Club. As president, I booked concerts with world renowned guitarists, and held weekly meetings to welcome anyone interested in the guitar.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching the guitar shortly after high school. The first lessons I taught were through the music studio where I first learned to play the guitar. I've taught both group and private lessons, and have experience with students of all ages. I love to find music that my students are excited about, and I feel that music should be about fun and dedication. I'm all about playing with other musicians, so make it a point to find music that I can play with my students. In my experience the most important part of learning music is being excited to play.
METHODS USED
I'm a firm believer in reading music, no matter what style of guitar you want to play. As someone who didn't grow up with music, the thought of reading music seemed like a huge hurdle. However, I discovered that it was easier than I thought and being able to read music helped me to understand larger concepts down the road. I also know that most students start playing the guitar because they want to learn their favorite songs, and I make sure to never ignore what my students want to play. Since I know that each student's progress is unique, I make custom lesson plans for every student based on what they want to learn.
LESSON STYLE
My goal is to help my students discover their potential. I've heard a lot of people say that they wish they could play an instrument, and I believe that anyone is capable of learning. I hope to inspire students to practice outside of lessons, and play for friends and family as much as possible. I love when my students find music on their own that they want to play. I believe that part of my job as a teacher is help my students discover their passion for the guitar. In addition to learning, I believe that lessons should be about discovering new possibilities.
