I am a very motivated and serious piano instructor who loves teaching any age. I graduated with a BS in music education magma cum laude. I spent many years in post-graduate school focusing on keyboard music of the Renaissance and Baroque Time Period (1500-1750). I received my masters degree in music graduating with a grade point average of 3.9. I spent 27 years teaching general/vocal music in a public school system in New Jersey. I began teaching piano privately in a music school in 2005. During my tenure, I produced many students that received accolades in state competitions. I also spent numerous years working closely with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
I began teaching piano privately in undergraduate music school by tutoring piano to music majors that were non-piano students. It was required that all non-piano stsudents must take 2 semesters of functional piano. I continued fulfilling this role from 1981-1985. In 1997 I began teaching private piano lessons to students in my school that had an interest in learning piano after school. I continued doing this until I began teaching piano in a private music school in 2005. Most of my teaching was with classical and pop music. It is my experience that students that are classically trained have a much better understanding of modern and pop music. I emphasize doing harmony/theory throughout my lessons. Students that understand the theoretical foundations of the selection they wish to learn and can analyze the music harmonically have a higher rate of success.
For beginning students, I prefer to use the Bastien piano method. This serious comes in 4 levels and is very thorough The Bastien series offers numerous books for each level in addition to the lesson book. Each level comes with a recital book, a arepertoire book, and a theory book for students to write in. The solo repertoire book is exciting because it showcases the child's ability to interpret concepts learned in the lesson book. For adults, I prefer to use the Alfred Piano series for Adults although I am open to other adult series if the student feels it will be better for them.
It is important that each student enjoys playing the piano and is willing to practice every day without being told by their guardian that its time to practice. With that being said, it is important that I allow each student to progress at his or her own pace. It is useless to move on to a new lesson if the student has not mastered what was taught on the most recent lesson. It is not unusual for me to have to repeat a lesson two or three times before moving on. Musical concepts grow on one another and continuing on to a new concept without an understanding of the current concept will only lead to frustration and the beginning of losing interest in the piano. A student that feels a sense of accomplishment will motivate him/her to learn more and have a desire to practice.
