I have been playing drum set for 20+ years and teaching privately for 12 years. I am new to the Denver area and love the city! I have also received a Master's and bachelor's degree in music education from Florida International University. I love performing and teaching. In Miami I performed at least twice a week for audiences as well as teaching in music in a public school setting and teaching drum set privately. I have played in wind bands, orchestras, metal, punk, hiphop and cover bands. I love teaching and performing and I have made a living doing so for the past 12 years.
In 2015-2016 I worked at Archimedean Middle Conservatory in Miami, FL teaching 6-8th grade general music. All students learned drum rudiments and call and response techniques. I also ran an after-school drum program where students learned more complex rudiments, rhythms, and how to play as a group. From 2013-2015 I taught at Keys Gate School where I ran a similar after-school drum program. From 2004 to now I have taught private drum lessons. Specifically, from 2008-2013, I worked at Music Depot in Florida City where I custom tailored lessons for each student and prepared them for classical and contemporary music ranging from hip hop to metal and everything in between. When I wasn't working from the the store I also traveled to student's homes where I apllied the same philosophy in catering each lesson to the students needs.
For beginners I ask what are their favorite songs and go from there. If they do not know then I usually play a popular song. I hope to get the beginner attuned with playing along and the importance of timing. With my guidance the student builds their own beginner book through our lessons. I give all students activities to work on during the week that I expect for them to show me at the next lesson. For all levels of students I find what kind of music and genres they prefer and work towards them being fluent in playing that genre. I use a collection of books as well including The New Breed, Syncopation, The Stone Book and other rudiment/technique training books.
I love teaching and seeing students progress in their skill. No student is like the next and I do my best to create an atmosphere for each student to get the most out of their time with me. I also make sure the understand how they should be practicing and the effective ways to practice. It is not as simple as saying, "Practice double strokes this week". The student needs to understand why they are learning the rudiment, tendencies of poor technique and how to monitor progress. I try my best to balance what the student wants to learn with what I believe is in their best interest to become a better player.
