Overview:
I'm a multi-instrumentalist, recording artist, painter, and music instructor based in Westchester, NY. Music is deeply important to me and I love sharing that passion. I graduated from Bard College in May 2022, majoring in Studio Arts. I have been a music instructor for multiple years and have performed live at venues and private events. My main instruments are guitar and bass, with my teaching ability for each instrument ranging from beginner to touring musician. My main guitar focal point is finger-picking. I began my guitar career by learning the methods of country-blues players such as Robert Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt, Elisabeth Cotten, John Fahey, Big Bill Broonzy, and others. While I play a large variety of music and teach all levels, advanced fingerpicking is my greatest strength as a musician. Lastly, I am a slide guitar player.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching during my time at College. I encourage younger students to practice every day, even if it's just for 15-20 minutes. Practicing at the same time every day is essential for young students; this builds a habit within the student's routine. Younger students need a stronger routine to thrive and without the structure of practicing every day, there is less progress each week. I currently work at two music schools in Westchester county; I have had private students in the past and would like more going forward. I currently teach a large swath of ages with a sizable span of student proficiency.
METHODS USED
No matter what the ability level and age, I try to find out what music the student is interested in. I do not teach from prefabricated books but rather teach songs to students and within those songs there are lessons. I have devised my own teaching methods which have been highly successful. For younger students, teaching traditionally can be extremely tedious and they can lose interest fast. I teach songs to my students and I find lessons within the songs. The same parts of traditional teaching material such as bits of music theory and snippets of musical knowledge are present in songs. I do this approach with all my students but this is the most critical with younger students.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style depends on the student's age and ability. Student's at different levels and ages will need various approaches. For everyone, I try to be calming, supportive, and as fun as possible; there are differences for various ages. With very young students, it's important to be as supportive as possible; especially when learning new things that can often be frustrating. Having an environment of support is paramount to me in these lessons. For teens, I try to talk more about the music they like and focus on what they're interested in. Most adults enjoy talking about what they're interested in as well, with brief few-minute jam sessions during lessons. This helps with learning how to improvise, write songs and generally improve upon what we were working on during the lesson.
