Overview:
As an experienced music educator, musician, and a mother, I have found that it is so important to have music in people's life starting from young age. I have taught at school settings and private studios for more 10 years, and recently got certified as Zumbini instructor to teach age 0-4 and their caregivers. I have earned a BA in music, a MA in piano performance, and a MS in music education. I also have played the flute as my second instrument since my high school years. I welcome all levels/ages of students.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching private students since my college years in Taiwan. When I moved to New York and pursued my degree in piano performance, I found that my passion is not as a performer, but an educator. I have noticed the need of good music education in America, and I strongly believe that we need to encourage the next generation to get close to music. Therefore, I turned to my interest to school music. After serving inner city elementary students for 10 years, I decided to get certified as a Zumbini instructor to teach age 0-4. It is important to have music in children's day to day life and have them enjoy making music and have fun. For me, music study is a life long journey and I want to start young.
METHODS USED
For age 0-4, I have opened Zumbini program for those babies and their caregivers. My piano lessons start at age 4. For those beginner students, I use Piano Adventures from Faber and Faber, typically focused on lesson books, performance books and theory books. When students move on to the higher levels, I will start to introduce easy classical repertoire, such as J.S. Bach or Bergermuller. If students have specific interests or preferred genre, I will encourage to explore them and help them along the way.
LESSON STYLE
It is so important to have students keep their interests in music and continue their life long journey of music making. Therefore, I would choose the music that fits student's ability and interest, and encourage to practice at his or her own pace. As a teacher, I am not just teaching students the content knowledge, I am also a cheerleader, and a facilitator to their music studies. I want to inspire my students to enjoy music in their day to day life, and have a passion on playing the instrument or making music.
