Overview:
I’m enthusiastic in teaching piano for students within diverse music backgrounds and wide array of age span. I’ve performed concerts across the state for competitions, festivals and outreach recitals. I also have rich experiences working as a collaborator in performances and rehearsals within ensemble groups either as a member or as a coach. Performing venues that I involved include Mixon Hall and Kulas Hall in Cleveland Institute of Music, Staller Center at Stony Brook University, Ruby Diamond Concert Hall in Tallahassee FL, University Center Hall at University of Florida, Beijing Concert Hall, etc. I have served as the accompanist for various instrumental players and singers. My teaching experiences implement on immense coaching for students on music exam and competitions preparations, such as ABRSM, NYSSMA and RCM music exams at all levels.
EXPERIENCE
I started to teach novice piano players while I was an undergraduate student at Cleveland Institute of Music. I’ve taught private lessons at both school studios and secondary music institutions in Ohio and Florida. My teaching experience towards college level students began at University of Florida in 2013, where I worked as a teaching assistant instructing Group Piano class, that covered subjects on functional keyboard skills, harmonization, sight reading and choral reading, major/minor scale, improvisation and chord progression. My teaching philosophy directs me to the strong commitment of musical education, especially for those instrumental training that require disciplined studies from younger ages. I have versatile pedagogical methodologies that tailor to student levels from early beginners to advanced learners. I am skillful for Suzuki style, and have successfully applied to students who are benefited from this learning method. I am also having a thoughtful investigation and a trained examination on using method books. To ensure the experience of learning piano is meaningful and fun, I like to transcribe the studies to a productive end as a result of structured and routinely base within high engagement of learning process.
METHODS USED
My teaching methods are based on students' concrete music backgrounds and ages. I tend to individualize teaching methods according to the specific needs reside different levels and learning habits. I prefer the methods that cater to one's ability, learning progression, and practicing capacity. For early beginners, I usually teach with method books. I have a resourceful collection on diverse piano method books and I guided students for the process of choosing the suitable one. I recommend students who are beginners to utilize Alfred's Basic Piano Library Course (four levels) and Five-Star Solos, as these two method books have the organized systems and clear protocols to let players progress yet can review the fundamentals at the same time. For intermediate level, I prefer Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Basic Adult Country Book. I also recommend Contemporary Piano literature Book 2, Broadway Classics from the Young Pianist's Library Volume A, and the FJH Pianist's Curriculum Recital Book. For the pianists who are advanced or beyond, I'm more opened and flexible in choosing method books, or not using the method books. The repertoires selection could determinate through musical genre, stylistic period, and pieces from particular composers. I also recommend to have music theory books along with instrumental learning.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is adjustable. I like to teach within flexible methodologies as opposed to have a fixed style at all times. I design lesson plans that are based on students' progressions and their educational needs. I want my students understand the value of learning piano, and subsequent benefits that can bring positive outcomes for students' academic performances. The learning atmosphere should be enjoyable as adequate objectives can be covered at the same time within sufficient informational contents . I always wish the piano learning experiences would have played some inevitable roles that have an enduring impact on students' lives.
