Overview:

I am passionate about singing and about teaching others singing technique. I have my bachelor‘s degree in music from the University of Mount Olive. I also studied in the Masters program at ECU for vocal pedagogy. I’ve had leads in local operas and and I am also a vocal artist who sings gospel music along with other genres. I am also a composer and I write my own music I have recently released another single for my Gospel CD entitled We Cry Out. I am currently a music teacher and teach grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

EXPERIENCE

I was raised in a musical family and my mother taught me to sing. I started singing solos at the age of four. I sung in the church and at other events throughout my childhood and then graduated high school and went to the University of Mount Olive College, During that time I worked with choirs and with voice students. Once I graduated I went to ECU to study Vocal Pedagogy and Music Education. In 2009 I got my first Music Teacher position and taught music and lessons from that point on. I currently work as an elementary music teacher.

METHODS USED

I like to start with having the student or their parent fill out an information sheet that will inform me of their experience and musical interests. After gathering that information I like to start with the vocal anatomy, posture, and breathing. I then like to focus on having the student watch a video that shows those things so that they can make an auditory and visual connection. I lime to expose the students to music that they may not be familiar with as well as music that they are interested in so that they can be a well rounded singer.

LESSON STYLE

My teaching style consists of building a report with my student while really using their interest as motivation. I set realistic goals while also challenging the student to achieve success. Each lesson will start with warm ups and guidance on how to reach the daily goal. When introducing a new concept I like to demonstrate and then have the student try what was modeled. The lessons are filled with real time instruction and learning. I love seeing when a student surprises themself while learning a new technique; it makes it all worth it for them and for myself. I like to lead with positive thinking because if you believe that you are capable of reaching a goal then you will.
