I graduated from Longy School of Music of Bard College with a Master's Degree in violin performance. At Longy School of Music of Bard College, I studied with world-class violinist and conductor, Dr. Sean Wang, as well as Grammy nominated violinist Jesse Mills, the co-founder of the Horszowski Trio. During my two years of conservatory education at Longy School of Music of Bard College, I received systematic training in pitch, European written theory, score reading and conducting; I have also delved into disciplined study of chamber music and orchestral playing in the Orchestral Studies class, multiple chamber music groups, and Longy’s special Orchestra Flex program, a reimagined conservatory orchestra, producing three concerts a semester, featuring works from standard repertoire such as Beethoven, Haydn, and Mozart, to compositions by marginalized composers, such as female composers, Asian composers or Longy students and faculties. My repertoire ranges from Baroque composers such as J. S. Bach, Classical composers such as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, to Romantic composers such as Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms.
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 5 years ago. Since I have been playing concertmaster for two university orchestras back then. It was my great pleasure to help each member of the orchestras enhance their skills and learn the orchestra repertoire. During my spare time from school, I consistently instruct a few orchestra members who were willing to learn and improve. It was a great pleasure to see students' progress and motivate them to learn more.
It is important to understand that every student, or every human being is different in terms of playing and progressing. As a teacher, it is my job to learn the uniqueness of every student and help them to find a way to play their best. It is also important to help the student like the instrument. Once they do, they will develop enough motivation to make the instrument sound good. And my job will be to guide the student to stay on the right track and encourage them to work. This is the most ideal way of learning which guarantees the best result. My teaching is very methodical. I have a special talent in finding the cause of a problem. For example, when I see someone play, I can tell exactly what should be fixed first in order to gain progress. It is my personal belief that sometimes a complicated thing is actually very simple. In violin playing, the easy things taught at the beginning is very crucial to a player in order to get on a higher level. Therefor, I prefer to help a student set the foundations right before getting into tons of repertoire. And believe me, a solid foundation doesn't me boring exercise. I would keep the learning of the fundamentals fun and interesting!
I, myself, is a very passionate performer. My enthusiasm in music making is what kept me going all these years. and I believe it is the very thing that would motivate and encourage a student to practice and learn. As a teacher, I will prioritize finding a way for a student to love the instrument and music, introducing them to a wonderful world that they have not yet encountered. Learning the violin is an extremely hard process, like everything else in life, there is never a shortcut. However, it is also a rewarding process that the student will not only gain the knowledge of playing the instrument, but how to be analytical, have patience, and how to focus better. The best reward is of course the joy for life. I will be there to help my students through this whole journey, and may them find as much pleasure in violin as I do!
Ms. Yue P. is my classmate during postgraduate studies, and she is also my first violin teacher who revealed to me the artistic charm of violin and the beautiful music world. What impresses me most is her dedication to violin and her perseverance in practicing. She often practices alone in a small room at the college of Arts or on the island in the middle of the lake nearby. Not everyone in the campus are well acquainted with her, but they must be familiar with the melody of violin that blows in from the small island every day. Besides, she is also a highly responsible teacher and always holds a lot of patience for offering guidance to her students. A green hand in violin performance as I am, she never gives up on me and imparts to me the very basic knowledge of violin without reservation, including how to hold the bow and adjust the pegs. Her guidance are highly effective and professional, which serves as illumination on my path of violin practice. I believe with her expertise and teaching methods, she will light up the music hearts of more violin learners and inspire them to make greater progress in violin performance.
