BS, University of Maryland College Park, Family Science
Overview:
I am a fun-spirited teacher that maintains structure to every lesson and I have a passion for teaching students of all ages how to play the piano. I started playing the piano about 25 years ago and I began teaching about 12 years ago. I performed in many recitals and guild auditions as a student, and in college I began to perform at Open Mics, at weddings and then dinner music at restaurants. I was a National Guild of Piano Teachers Member from 2006 to 2008 and prepared several students to perform in guild auditions. I have recorded songs that I have written in different studios and enjoy the performance aspect of learning songs. I encourage students to perform in recitals too if they so desire.
EXPERIENCE
My experience with teaching has been extremely rewarding and fun, which has made me truly have a passion for all kinds of learning styles. Throughout the continuity of years that I have taught many students I love watching their progress since they kept me as their teacher for so long. I have found that when a student enjoys the song that they are playing that is when they practice the most. So I strive to keep the lessons fun and enjoyable while collaborating with the student to decide what song is the best to learn for them to be challenged, enjoy it and practice the song on a daily basis. I am aware that some students may come to me at different learning levels so I am always prepared to work at the pace that is best for them to ensure good results and productive progress.
METHODS USED
When beginner students start lessons with me I generally use a Lesson Book and eventually a Technique Book and soon after some kind of Theory Book to learn behind the music. For the lesson book for beginners I like to use the Alfred's Series, which has all kind of levels of beginning piano whether you are 4 years old up to adult. For the technique book I like to use a Hanon series, which I start first with exercises by rote and patterns until the student can read music and understand the exercises in the book. There is a theory book I like to use for older students who are later beginners or who have already taken lessons before and there is a Notespeller Book I recommend instead in the Alfred's series for younger beginners. If a student has taken lessons before and starts lessons with me I will see what books they have and if they are interested in continuing with those, or possibly changing to the Alfred's series, or ready to start branching off into more advanced pieces of music like classical, pop, rock and anything they like where we can get sheet music.
LESSON STYLE
I like to collaborate with the student to learn what songs they desire to know how to play and acknowlede their achievement when they can play the song that they worked so hard to learn. It is rewarding to me to see a student learn a new concept and watch as they realize when that musical thought makes sense! I want every student of mine to feel comfortable asking questions when something does not make sense and I am always prepared to explain a concept in various ways so that all learning styles can understand. I encourage students to practice every day, strive to inspire them to play songs they like and prepare them for performing in front of an audience if they so desire.
