Hey Guys! I'm Zach. I'm from Colorado and I've lived in New York for 5 years. I love people, NYC (especially the summers), nature, and of course music! I perform & record as a drummer & also produce electronic music. I love teaching, ever since I was 14! I'm so grateful for music, as it has taken me to amazing places and stages in this world, and also because I get to spend my days sharing the feelings I get through this beautiful art form, whether on stage, in the studio, or in lessons! Cheers, I hope to meet you :)
I started teaching kids in my neighborhood when I was 14, even though I had only been playing for a year! I kept it up thru highschool, teaching privately as well as being captain for the drumline, where I ran rehearsals and acted as liaison between staff and students. Since moving to New York in 2012 I have kept a consistent private studio. I emphasize making the instrument fun and a positive experience. Yet with my older / more serious students I like to push them to reach a level of performance they didn't think they could get to! I also like to look at how what we learn on the drums relates to the bigger picture within the music music and within life. If you study with me, you will improve command of your instrument and learn how to make the music feel good, all in a positive atmosphere.
I tailor each lesson to the student; my goal is to find the best way to bring the instrument to the student (as opposed to forcing the student to the instrument). For beginners, we can learn basic beats, basic fills, learn the fundamentals of technique and how to read music. If possible I like to play along on drums or piano to get the feeling of playing with other people. Eventually we will move up to learning songs. As the student becomes more advanced, we will learn beats that are more challenging in a variety of styles, and gain independence and fluidity around the drums. We will learn rudiments and more finely tune their technique and learn songs that are more and more complex. For students at higher levels we can get into jazz drumming and rudimental percussion. No matter what, the lessons will be a great time and you can get better every week!
I strive for the right balance between enjoyment and progress. I believe, especially for beginners and younger students, a good atmosphere is the most important thing; I want them to have a good impression of music and the instrument. There are a multitude of ways to learn the drums so I believe it is important to find the right way for each student. I listen to the student and try to learn who they are and how they learn best first and foremost, then I use my knowledge to guide them down a path of learning that is most natural.
