Singer of the Year, BYU
I have a Bachelor's in Voice from Brigham Young University. I love helping people discover and realize their potential as singers. My training is specifically in vocal performance and voice coaching. I have also taken classes in vocal pedagogy and choral conducting. I have extensive experience working in both musical theatre and opera. I approach my teaching from a theatrical and dramatic standpoint, with emphasis on interpretation of the music. We will also spend a great deal of time on expanding range and improving vocal technique.
My first major role was Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. As a student at Brigham Young University I memorized a 300-page Italian opera in 10 days. I returned to BYU after graduation as emeritus Singer of the Year to perform as a guest artist. Some of my performing credits include: Pirates of Penzance (Major-General), Cosi Fan Tutte (Guglielmo/Don Alfonso), The Mikado (title role), Mary Poppins (Bank Chairman), and The Music Man (Marcellus). I performed with Utah Lyric Opera alongside Broadway veteran Lisa Hopkins Seegmiller.
My teaching methods are very straightforward. We spend a lesson working through one or two songs. These songs can be provided by the student or by myself. After running through the songs we examine the tools that would be best used to improve the sound and performance of the songs. The most common techniques that I use in lessons are chiaroscuro resonance, even flow phonation, and vowel equalization. I believe in improving by trial and error. It is ok to make mistakes in the lesson because that is how we improve. The goal should be to learn from our mistakes and move forward as an artist.
My style is rooted deeply in performance and dramatic interpretation. We will work extensively on microexpressions, which are genuine expressions provoked by real emotion. If we think of real experiences when we sing that we relate to, it will transform the performance and bring it to life. The performance will be more believable. My goal as a teacher is to help you give your best performance that allows the audience to have an emotional experience. Good music done right can change lives and inspire people.
