To me as a musician, teaching is as important and as necessary to our art as performing, and it is always a joy to share that art with students. I graduated from Kent State University in 2015 with my Bachelor of Science in Music Education, followed by a Master of Music in Bassoon Performance in 2019, and recently completed an Artist Diploma from UC-CCM. Although a bassoonist primarily, I've performed with orchestras such as the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, and the Warren Philharmonic, as well as bands like the Akron Symphonic Winds, the Cleveland Winds, and the Packard Band.
I began teaching private lessons when starting college, and have maintained a studio of various woodwind students of various ages since 2011. In the time between then, I have been involved as a private instructor, small chamber coach, full band director, and covered any other position possible for many schools; I have ample experience in teaching and performing many styles common in the school system. My experience has led me to find ways to work with students as individuals, and adapt to their wants and needs to keep them engaged in the learning process. I welcome students of all ages and experience levels.
I like to create a combination of my own supplementary material, along with what the students are preparing for classes or outside engagements. I believe in a very strong fundamental background and have created a set of exercises geared to maximize effectiveness, and guarantee progress. Excellence in preparation leads to excellence in performance, and a focus on fundamentals builds the skillset and the confidence to achieve. In addition to the exercises, I have a standard solo repertoire curriculum students will play through, based on their comfort level with the instrument. For every student, I encourage them to bring their own music as well and will often let them choose their solo repertoire if they have input; the most important thing to me is creating engagement and a love for music.
As I've developed my skills as a teacher, I've also developed my personal music philosophy which is: My priority and my goal is to create life-long music lovers. The greatest success to me is not a student with simply a high level of achievement, but one who continues to play and love music for the rest of their life, and I focus my teaching around this. I put a high emphasis on fundamentals early, because it builds in the skills to be comfortable playing music. All of my curriculum is individually based, frequently assessed, and quickly adapted to each students' ability level, comfort level, and enjoyment level. I strive to make a personal connection with each of my students to understand their motivations, and work with them to accomplish their goals- as long as they love what they're doing, my goal is already accomplished.
I took lessons with Mr. Zach E and he was so fun and knowledgeable. I have yet to find another online music teacher that keeps me engaged the way he did. Thanks for everything, Mr. Zach E!
Zach helped me get into the school I wanted and kept me motivated throughout the summer before I started college as a music student. He also knows a lot about reeds which was super helpful.
