Overview:
I am a professional musician and educator with a passion for sharing what I have learned with others. I have had a wide array of opportunities to study, perform, and work within the music industry, and I want to communicate the tools I have found useful in those endeavors. I hold a BM in Education from University of New Hampshire and a MM in Performance from New England Conservatory of Music. I initially began with a focus on orchestral playing, but later fell in love with drum set playing. My favorite areas of performance are jazz and metal.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching privately since the age of 16. Over the years I have accumulated a lot of educational materials and methods, and I like to cater these to the needs of my students. My experiences in recording, touring, and working in pit orchestras has helped me understand some of the essential elements of performing on percussion instruments. Whatever it is that my students would like to do, I try to motivate them to continue working towards those goals. I do my best to make lessons fun and meaningful whether it's the 1st or 100th session.
METHODS USED
For beginners I usually begin with Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone and Fundamental Studies for Snare Drum by Garwood Whaley. Once the student has a good grasp on basic reading and technique, I usually introduce rudiments and start working on solo or play along repertoire. I also like to use The Drum Set Musician by Rod Morgenstein. Besides book work I also like to bring in things that I am working on either with bands I play with or personal projects. Some of my teaching is listen and repeat as well.
LESSON STYLE
I think the most important part of teaching is developing a positive mentoring relationship to the student. My favorite teachers always went above and beyond to not only educate me on their favorite subject, but also to show me life lessons along the way and listen to my problems. Ultimately I know that not every one of my students will become a professional musician, and that is okay! I do want them to develop a positive relationship with rhythm and music, and an ability to enjoy these things in anything they listen to.
