Overview:
I have found my way through music primarily as an instrumentalist, though I have enjoyed being able to stretch my talents into both teaching and writing. While studying Jazz at the University of Central Missouri, I was able to pick up a wide range of experiences with concert and classical playing. I had the opportunities to perform multiple times with various musicals on campus as well, on a small range of instruments. Coming out of the University, I have worked on increasing my abilities through my instruments, writing, teaching, and listening to make sure I can continue to grow and mature as a musician.
EXPERIENCE
I started conducting private lessons while in college. I taught multiple high school age students with varying degrees of experience, making an interesting case of approach in my own teaching style. I have been able to incorporate what I have learned in my own lessons as a student into my lessons as an instructor. In turn, teaching in a smaller setting has helped with clearing some struggles in my own playing. I find it important to be able to ask questions and receive feedback from my students as well, to make sure that lesson time is efficient, informative, and enjoyable.
METHODS USED
The fundamentals of playing are a great place to start with any lessons. Working with scales, breathing, and intonation are among those fundamentals that help build up ones playing at the strongest points. From there, it is important to incorporate those into etudes and solos, learning how they function within written pieces. Another important aspect of successful lessons, I believe, is giving the student a choice. Working with solos and topics they are interested in help make the environment more open and available for progression. Regardless of how skilled the student is, there is always something further to learn, as well as something for them to bring up to the table to work on.
LESSON STYLE
I want to make sure that my students are enjoying the lessons and are able to take something away from as many lessons as possible. Keeping their interest is important, therefore I make sure to ask questions to clarify what we would be working on. I also make sure to get their feedback often to ensure that retention and appeal is not affected negatively from lesson to lesson. When working with new students, it may take a couple sessions to fully grasp where the progression can start in a way that lines up with the efforts of the student. Another way to help progression is creating goals within sessions, starting smaller and working towards personal achievements that the student, and to a lesser extent, the teacher, can be proud of. The main goal is to always enjoy and learn all that there is to learn.
