I come from Wuhan, China. When I was about five years old, my parents bought a piano, and I began my first piano lesson. I was not feeling comfortable or patient to practice, which was similar to many other kids. I once quit my piano playing for three years during junior school for not having enough time and energy to continue, however, I found the outburst of my enthusiasm towards music at the age of sixteen, and soon I picked my forgotten piano skills up. I have been playing since then without stopping. In 2014, I enrolled the bachelor degree in piano performance in University of Windsor, Canada, and graduated in 2019. I participated in many musical activities, for instance, community concerts, choir performances and masterclasses. My ultimate goal is to compose, and I have been researching and composing for several years.
My teaching experience is not much. I had few students during my university period for about one year. Although a limited amount of time was put on teaching, I had wonderful experience with my piano teacher, Dr. Edvard Gregory Butler, who had already been teaching piano for over fifty years and truly altered my development. I had many incorrect way to practice, as well as many incorrect understanding, and he helped my to conquer those difficulties. In the end of my university life, I appreciate the learning experience he granted me, and it gives me the concept of teaching other students in a similar way.
Music pleases our ears, so, many people would think to train their ears only; however, no one will ever play music well if ear is the only tool. Listening, visualising and touching should get involved at the same time. This is what I learned in my lessons. It is proved to be a helpful and efficient way of learning music, and I wish my student will eventually understand it. In order to achieve it, ear training, sight reading and singing will be applied. For beginners, especially young kids, I would like to focus more on the gestures and basic theory which serves your score reading. For intermediate students, I would teach a bit more in-depth theory to correspond the levels of playing, as well as memorising pieces. For advanced students, a more professional training such as advanced theory, college-level basic sight reading and singing, and relatively difficult repertoire will be given. All students will be asked to practice idioms, Hanon and Hutcheson.
My goal of teaching is to develop students so they can proceed to a professional study in music and enjoy the music for the rest of life. It is important that students should be trained in a professional way no matter what their career is going to be. I will not force any student to do anything, however, he or she will be strongly encouraged to practice as instructed. The lessons for young kids are always relaxing, and I will plan to put more or less content depending on their mood. Older students usually have more patience; therefore, I tend to treat their lessons more seriously. In addition, if you need to have your lessons taught in Chinese Mandarin, I will be of service.
