2013-2015 New York University Adjunct Instructor
I completed two Master of Music degrees: the first from Fu-Jen University in Taiwan and the second from New York University, where I received a full-time graduate assistantship as an adjunct piano instructor. Furthermore, I recently obtained my DMA degree from Louisiana State University by receiving full-time assistantship as an accompanist. I’ve had the opportunity to perform in the United States, Taiwan, Europe. I’m looking forward to passing my performing experience to the next generation.
I have been teaching piano for over 12 years to aspiring pianists ranging from 5 year-olds to undergraduate performing arts majors. I am very passionate about teaching, because I am just as fulfilled as my students when they are able to master a piece and gain a sense of accomplishment. I’ve also learned how to give students encouraging and practical feedback from my professor at LSU, Gregory Sioles. His warm and caring personality is my goal as a teacher and pianist. I also provided ear- training and theory lessons when I was in Taiwan.
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I will find the repertoire which fit’s students’ abilities and interests. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
I’m a encouraging teacher but also set practical goals for my students. I enjoy watching students learn new things and get inspirations from the lessons. I give students constructive advice and make practical practice plans for them to help them achieve their goals. I’m very patient but always let students know what my expectations are and help them to make their goals step by step. Since I’m also a collaborative pianist, I’ve been working with lots of instrumentalists and also played in big ensembles, knowing many different repertoire besides piano helps me teach students how to expand their imaginations of music.
I received piano lessons from Zih Yun twice during my time in college. I've had numerous teachers over the years and I would definitely rate Zihyun among the top! She was always encouraging progress, setting realistic milestones, and ensuring that we meet those. I even built up the confidence to perform in front of people for the first time in years. Her level of detail in providing you a personal learning experience, coupled with her more than kind attitude, and vast knowledge base in her field, I would wholeheartedly recommend her to any prospective piano students.
