For beginning students I teach the fundamentals: holding the instrument, explaining how it works, and then how to make a sound. I focus on sound first and foremost, trying to make a pure sound, and then hearing and being able to understand how the instrument works. I don't get into simply reading exercises until the student has a firm grasp and enthusiasm for the instrument. With older students I work with what their goals are; for example if All-State Band is the goal we focus on playing band excerpts and the level of fundamentals needed to get there. Read More

As beginners, I recommend the first Hal Leonard Essential Elements Band books with EEi. The EEi feature allows students to access online features that coordinate with their private lessons and enhance their ability to learn. As students progress through the book, I add solo repertoire to the student's EEi account so they can both hear it played and record their own performance of each work of band music. Guitar students start with Essential Elements, piano students begin with Piano Adventures/Adult Piano Adventures, and both offer interactive online components which enhance the student's resources and ability to practice and learn between lessons. I have been teaching in various circumstances since 2010. I began with teaching middle school jazz sectionals, moved to high school marching band groups, and now teach masterclasses as well as private lessons. I have had the opportunity of teaching elementary aged students with Baton Rouge, LA's Kids' Orchestra program, and have taught college aged students through teaching assistantships and private lessons. I'm a very passionate and motivated educator who loves sharing that passion and motivation with my students. I'm currently attending Metropolitan State University of Denver getting my bachelor's in trumpet performance. I've been playing the trumpet since I was 11, but really found that it was my calling in my junior year of high school where I decided to pursue a degree in something that I love! Since then, I have won the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award in 2018, played with the Parker Symphony as the assistant principal trumpet, have played with the Colorado Brass, the Rocky Mountain Jazz Orchestra, and the Mariachi Los Caracaminos de MSU, as well as many other chamber ensembles both professionally and at my university.
