Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace and is learning things that interest them on a fundamental level. After getting my bachelor's degree in music education from University of Maryland, I taught general, band, and strings in Montgomery County in Maryland. For beginning students on brass instruments, I like to use the Rubank Methods. It is important to me to get the student playing familiar tunes as soon as possible so that they enjoy playing but not at the expense of the fundamentals. Generally, I choose a piece for a student to play and then they choose a piece. Of course I emphasize the rudiments of each instrument and I incorporate technique into each piece they choose and each piece I choose.
