I like to learn who my student is before starting anything. I want to know what their interests are and what their view on music is. I then take that and bond with them and teach them in a certain way that matches their thoughts and personalities the best. I like to have fun and not be too strict as long as the student is doing their work, but if they are not staying on track the fun is replaced with more focus on concepts to be sure they are learning what is needed. My teaching experience began in 2006. During my college years I taught trombone to fellow students and later as a college instructor and high school band director, taught young adults. My experience as an elementary school teacher has rewarded me with skills to work with younger children. I now work with seasoned musicians as a mentor and coach. I have fun too. Many students give up simply because they don't know how to practice, but I hope to show them how easy it is to enjoy your practicing. Once a student understands and can see the fruits of their labor, it's very easy for them to push themselves. I want to give a student the opportunity to do that, but I can't force them to practice.
